Student Handbook Communication I am most easily reached daily through my e-mail address which is [email protected]. I can also be called at school at 336-5853, ext 205. In the event of an emergency, my home phone number is 824-1517 and my cell phone is 327-5389. You can find Spelling Words, and other important class information on my web sight which is: mrslevystcharles.weebly.com. Organization Each day your child will bring home his/her S.T.A.R. file. This file will be used to encourage students to be organized and to take responsibility (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) for their things. Fourth grade continues the foundation built during the past four years, and it is important to teach children how to keep up with communication between home and school. The S.T.A.R. file is a way of helping your child to be responsible for these communications. The focus of the S.T.A.R. file is to eliminate lost notes, homework, calendars, announcements and office newsletters as well as to keep parents informed of important events and academic progress. It will contain his/her homework folder, assignment notebook and notes for you. On Fridays, the S.T.A.R. file will contain a Friday Folder instead of a homework Folder. Students must have their S.T.A.R. folder and assignment book with them each day. The S.T.A.R. folder should be arranged as follows: *Front pocket: Assignment Book *Second pocket: Homework to completed/returned the next day *Third pocket: Ongoing projects/reports *Fourth pocket: Prayers/Other important information *Fifth pocket: Extra paper Each day as a class we will fill out the assignment notebook. I will check them daily the first quarter. To make sure the students bring back their assignment notebook each day they will receive 2 points which will be included into their overall class Cooperation grade. The yellow Friday Folder will contain your child’s graded papers and other school correspondence for the week. The students should feel proud of their work and enjoy showing it to you. Please sign the ⌠Friday Folder form indicating that you have looked through the papers and have read the notes. Return the S.T.A.R. file (and any necessary forms) to school each Monday. Homework Your child will have Math and Spelling homework Monday-Thursday. Weekly Homework assignments and Spelling words are listed on my web sight. There will be additional homework in other subjects from time to time. Most 4th grade students should expect to work approximately 40 minutes each evening. During times of special assignments and reports, Math and Spelling will be lightened. If at any time your child is spending more time, please feel free to contact me. Students are responsible for completing and turning in homework on time. Please do not do the work for them, but make sure it is completed correctly each night. Students are expected to read at least 20 minutes every night and to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Late Home Work Policy per quarter is as follows: - First missing assignment must be completed at recess. - Second missing assignment must be completed at recess and students will give up entire recess. - Third missing assignment must be completed at recess, student will miss two additional recesses, and parents will be notified. - Fourth missing assignment will result in the loss of eligibility for field trips and class parties that quarter, and a parent/teacher conference will be requested. Expectations I expect all students to follow school and classroom rules at all times. We have just 3 classroom rules which we call Life Goals: 1. Do what Jesus would do? 2. Do the right thing, and 3. Treat others right. These cover almost any situation that may arise at school or in life. I want students to be responsible for their behavior, especially their good behavior. I want them to feel good about the choices that they make throughout the day. Lastly, I want students to feel safe in our classroom and happy to come to school every day. Curriculum Math We are in our third year teaching Go Math! which is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This new curriculum provides a coherent and rigorous curriculum that has been found to ensure the success of all students. An instructional approach based on research-informed instructional practices is provided. This curriculum offers and offers eight research informed instructional strategies to support effective teaching and learning of mathematics. www.hmhco.com Language Arts (to include Spelling, Grammar, Writing and Reading) We are beginning our first year using Wonders, McGraw Hill publishers, designed to foster a love of reading in all children. By providing a comprehensive set of connected resources for all learners in grades K-6, Wonders offers educators the ability to adapt instruction with confidence as students grow. Our focus on teaching the whole child, and every child, prepares students to be lifelong learners and critical thinkers. www.mheducation.org Social Studies We are in our fourth year of a new adoption from MacMillan/McGraw-Hill titled “Indiana in the Nation and the World”. This curriculum provides standards-based content, developed from the latest research and organized around the themes of Social Studies. The program integrates reading support in every lesson and instills citizenship through real-life role models. We are studying Indiana History. The major themes incorporated are: Indiana’s Land and People, People Places, and Events, Creating a State, Indiana Grows, Indiana in Modern Times and Indiana Today. www.mhschool.com TIME For Kids is a weekly classroom news magazine that motivates kids to read! Issues cover a wide range of real-world topics kids love to learn about - and it's the best nonfiction text you'll find! TIME For Kids builds reading and writing skills and is easily integrated across your curriculum, including social studies, science and math. www.timeforkids.com Religion This is our third year in a the series: “WeBelieve” published by Sadlier, is drawn from the wisdom of the community. This program was developed by nationally recognized experts in catechesis, curriculum, and child development. These teachers of the faith and practitioners helped to frame these age-appropriate and appealing lessons. In addition, a team including respected catechetical, liturgical, pastoral, and theological experts shared their insights and inspired the development of the program. www.WEBELIEVEweb.com Service Projects This year you will notice that we will continue to learn about the Catholic Social Teachings in religion and in class discussions about our community and world. We try to demonstrate our understanding of these teachings by reaching out to our community and world through service projects. They will make a huge difference in the lives of those we serve. Ideas are still in the planning stages. If you have any ideas for service activities or speakers please let me know! Field Trips Information regarding field trips will be sent home as soon as each trip is confirmed. Closer to each date a permission slip will be sent home as well as a request for drivers and/or chaperones. I will plan field trips that are tied to the curriculum and provide opportunities for meaningful learning experiences. We have tentative field trips planned for:
Parent Volunteers We will need parents to drive us on field trips. From time to time, I may need additional help. If you are interested please feel free to contact me. Generally, I do not use parents inside the classroom. Fourth graders are getting bigger now and sometimes having parents in the classroom proves to be a distraction. * Invitations to Birthday Parties may only be distributed at school when all students in the class are invited. All other invitations must be mailed or distributed by parents. We have had problems in the past with hurt feelings of students not included. Working through these problems causes loss of teaching time and the loss of friendships. This is not negotiable. 2019-20 Class List: 1. Cali Allen 2. Gabe Allen 3. Brady Beasley 4. Kennedy Berry 5. Eleanor Cook 6. Renee Cortese 7. Seth Hankins 8. Analise Iovino 9. Elise Mendoza 10. Jonah Powell 11. Vito Radu Snacks and Birthday Treats We have several students with dietary restrictions.
