Newbery Book Report Due Monday, March 27, 2020 During the month of March students will choose a book to read from the provided list of Newbery Award winning books. Choices must be teacher approved and will be assigned on a “first come” basis. There will be no duplications. After reading their books, students will design fly covers for their books. The fly covers should be organized as follows:
Inside left flap: Each student will write a minimum of three (3) paragraphs about his/her book. Paragraphs should contain a minimum of five (5) sentences. Writing should include a “hook” in the first paragraph to persuade prospective readers to read his/her book. Students should give a brief summary of what happened in their books without giving away the ending. Careful detail should be given to listing events in chronological order, maintaining uniform verb tenses, subject/verb agreement and the use of vivid details.
Inside right flap: At the top of the flap the students will write a brief biography about the author of their books. Students may want to tell where their authors live(d), something about the author’s family life, what kind of education he/she has/had, and list other books the author has written.
FrontCover: Students are to design the front covers for their books. Markers, crayons, colored pencils are all acceptable. Be sure to include the title, the author’s name, and the illustrator’s name (if there is one).
Back Cover: Students can choose to find several relevant paragraphs from the book that they feel best introduces their books and write them on the back cover or they can invent five (5) reviews about their books. The reviews should include a statement (in quotes), and who made that statement. Students should also use some type of artwork on the back.
